Aurelio took a breath and looked up slowly to the headmaster- no, Fidelis- before him. His beautiful, lavender-fringed green eyes were glassy with tears, his cheeks flushed lightly and wet.
"I... I..."
Fidelis, too, had lost family? Aurelio didnt know how to start. He felt he could speak freely to this man, this great figure... But where to start?
"I miss my city of bridges."
and with that first line, it just started coming out. He had kept his past hidden so long... It just came gushing from his lips.
"I-I was born and raised in Venice, Italy... My... My mother and father- Catalina and Lucian... They were dancers. Not gypsies, dancers. Always out trying to earn coins for us to eat... Though there was never enough. We went to sleep hungry more often than not, all of us in one bed, because we didnt have any blankets to keep warm... Father would sometimes sleep on the floor, or mother..."
He took a breath,
"We didnt have much of a house. For the most part, we lived in this old shed Father had patched up... The roof leaked, the bitter winter air always came In, it wasn't... Hospitable. Whatever clothes we had were made of scraps of clothing, stitched up by mama or Francesca..."
Aurelio smiled weakly,
"Mama always said she could never buy Lydian and I clothes, because we grew so fast... But we all knew it was because of money. I remember... One winter, papa came home with a goat. A scruffy thing she was, but valuable... He claimed he found her by the canal, woterlogged and unable to get up.. Mama and Francesca nursed her back to health. In return, she gave us milk to sell. we could rarely drink it ourselves, because... Well, it was obvious we needed to sell it."
Aurelio, by now, was crying. But he didnt care.
"There were six of us. Mama, Papa, Francesca, Lydian, Felicity, and myself. Though Felicity died when she was born... It was too cold. We didnt have enough blankets for her..."
Aurelio stumbled over the words,
"Francesca and I used to go down to the ocean and pick shells. All sorts of shells. Sometimes we'd accidentally pick a live one, and get squirted in the face..."
He laughed weakly, "But we made necklaces to sell. When mama hurt her ankle, we needed more money... Lydian and I went out as beggars, Francesca sold out necklaces, papa sold the milk... But... We never had enough. Mama died in her sleep one night, laying next to father."
Aurelio looked up to Fidelis.
"He said he saw an angel take her, and he didnt cry, because he knew she was safe."
